The Issues Page

But 1st "Eyes Wide Open" there are some issues to be addressed and I am now identifying these but not necessarily the solution. In the elimination of the Driver Tube (12BY7) and the Final Tube (6DQ5) this is a cause for some of the issues.

Balancing out the Carrier
With no Panel Meter, how to show the Null ?
Too Much Mic Gain With no Panel Meter, you can't see the voice peaks?
Small Chassis Physical Chassis Heating and Air Circulation
The Rig Enclosure Buy a Box or Build a Box?
Alternate Power Supplies Can you use a Heathkit HP-23 or a Drake AC-4?
Carrier Balance Output Transformer Poor Carrier Suppression
Microphone Amp Was Flaky Poor Microphone Gain

  1. The answer to detect Carrier Null is an external SWR Bridge. Simply adjust the Carrier Balance for no output. Sampling the Output with a DSO is more accurate.
  2. The answer is the SWR Bridge ~ Adjust the voice peak modulation to 1/3 to 1/2 of the TUNE output. Sampling the Output with the DSO will show "Flat Topping"
  3. I purchased a small low noise Fan (ball bearing) which will cool the tube area
  4. The final enclosure will be homebrewed case 12W X 8D X 4H
  5. While I built a power supply (clunky) I already have a heathkit HP-23 fitted with a Swan Power Plug
  6. Found another IF Transformer in the Junk Box -- much better carrier suppression
  7. One half of the 12AU7 was bad. Replaced the tube -- all Good
